Regardless of what genres one typically enjoys, history&#8217;s greatest book series are proof that <strong>often, literary masterpieces come in groups<\/strong>. But while many book series achieve the admirable feat of getting better with each new installment, others end up <strong>offering the best of what they have in their very first volume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say that what follows is in any way bad. In fact, the best book series that peak with their first chapter nevertheless have sequels that are also among the greatest texts their respective genres have ever seen. These five novels, which introduced the world to the iconic Tom Ripley, were nothing short of groundbreaking, subverting the conventions of mid-20th-century crime fiction by forcing the reader to (at times quite uncomfortably) sympathize with a cold-blooded criminal. It all started back in 1955 with <em>The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>All of this classic&#8217;s sequels are also great, <em>Ripley&#8217;s Game <\/em>in particular standing out as strong competition for the title of &#8220;best Tom Ripley book.&#8221; However, <strong>there&#8217;s simply no beating <em>The Talented Mr. Ripley <\/em>in terms of charm, influence, or iconicity<\/strong>. Morgan<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Takeshi Kovacs<\/em> Series in particular standing out as one of the best. Takeshi Kovacs is the name of the lead character of these incredible cyberpunk novels, starting with 2002&#8217;s <em>Altered Carbon<\/em>. All in all, it&#8217;s not unreasonable to say it&#8217;s one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the last 25 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>Broken Angels <\/em>is delightfully creative, and <em>Woken Furies <\/em>is <em>almost <\/em>as good as the first book, but <em>Altered Carbon <\/em>is simply too thrilling and too perfectly written to be beaten by its sequels. It&#8217;s a pure hard-boiled murder mystery with an airtight noir-ish structure, but also <strong>an engrossing piece of science fiction with some of the strongest worldbuilding<\/strong> of any cyberpunk novel from the 21st century. Knopf<\/small><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Cormac McCarthy <\/strong>was nothing short of one of the most important and influential American novelists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a titan of English-language writing who proved that genre fiction could be true high art. Case in point: the <em>Border <\/em>Trilogy, composed of three of the greatest Western books that the 20th century ever saw. There&#8217;s no consensus on what the best book in the series is, each installment having many scholars and bookworms pointing to it as the greatest; but there&#8217;s a strong argument to be made in favor of <em>All the Pretty Horses<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, and rather unsurprisingly considering that it&#8217;s McCarthy we&#8217;re talking about, the <em>Border <\/em>Trilogy is one of those series where every book is a masterpiece. There&#8217;s something uniquely special about <em>All the Pretty Horses<\/em>, though. Every now and then, however, pretty much anyone who loves reading\u2014including science fiction fans\u2014craves something lighter, and that&#8217;s precisely why comedy literature is so important. And as far as comedic books go, it doesn&#8217;t get much better (or much funnier) than <strong>Douglas Adams<\/strong>&#8216; <em>The Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The series that carries the original book&#8217;s title is fantastic, but since Adams kept growing increasingly burnt out on the story due to writer&#8217;s block and publisher pressure, each installment kept growing a little weaker than the last. That&#8217;s not to say that <em>Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide <\/em>is the best of the bunch merely by default, though. It may very well be <strong>the single most iconic and widely celebrated sci-fi book series in history<\/strong>; and if not, it&#8217;s at least <em>way <\/em>up there. Herbert only wrote six novels before he died and his son took over the series, and though all six have plenty to offer and have generally aged perfectly, the original <em>Dune <\/em>stands on a tier all of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, many sci-fi literature fans would confidently call Herbert&#8217;s magnum opus the greatest sci-fi novel ever written, and it would be difficult to disagree. It certainly is one of the most influential sci-fi books of all time, one that strikes a perfect balance between flowing like a traditional Hero&#8217;s Journey epic and offering plenty of thematic and narrative uniqueness that still makes it feel subversive decades later.
